7 Weeks

Had our first doctor's appointment yesterday and she assures us that I am healthy and that everything should be fine with baby.  Of course, you can't really tell at this point because we haven't had an ultrasound and it is too early to hear baby's heart beat... but good to have reassurance from the doc.  I'm actually down about 2 lbs from my usual weight.  Could just be because I haven't had as much of an appetite as I normally do.  On another note, I don't love the doctor I've been seeing and am looking for a new OBGYN stat.
Size of baby: A blueberry.  Just over 1/2".
Weight gain: Down 2 lbs
Maternity clothes:  Not yet.  Still rocking my usual summer gear - shorts, tanks, and maxi dresses!
Gender:  Had a dream that we had twin girls.  Can you imagine??!!
Nursery: The room that will be the nursery is currently functioning as a guest room.  It is quite a pretty shade of extra-pale violet.  I haven't decorated it the way I normally would because in my mind it has always been meant to be a nursery.  Once our guests of next week head home, we may start thinking about changing it up.  It is still early, of course!
Development / Movement: Baby Squish is just starting to form arm and leg joints and won't be moving for a while yet.
Sleep: Yeah, I'm still sleepy.  Beyond sleepy.  Exhausted.  I need naps just about every day.  Brutal!
What I miss: Nothing yet.  Visited with my girlfriend Nasreen on Monday.  Glad it was during the day so I didn't have to explain my not having a glass of wine!
Best moment this week: Having our first doctor's appointment was kind of exciting!  I also met with a new design client and chose paint colours for his yaletown condo.
Looking forward to: The visit from my cousins/sister and the boys!  We have a crazy fun week planned.  I'm a little concerned about this extreme exhaustion I've been feeling and being able to get through all of the activities we have lined up without napping, but it is totally worth it!  Also really looking forward to breaking the news to the 6 of them.  Love these guys!!
Cravings: So, weird.... veggie subs from Subway.  I suppose if my cravings can be half-healthy, I'm not doing so bad just yet.
Symptoms: Exhaustion.  If I wake up at 8am, I'm back to sleep by 10:30, up over mid-day, then back to bed from about 2-5pm.  Trey comes home some days from work and I'm still in bed.  It is ridiculous!  Can't complain, though - I have yet to have any nausea/morning sickness.
Workouts: I haven't had the energy to hit the gym.  The most activity I have been able to manage is walking the dogs.

6 Weeks

Well, I am 6 weeks pregnant (as of yesterday), and happy to share my first photo!  I would call it a "bump photo", but I don't have a bump yet.

We thought it would be cute to track the pregnancy, not only in photos of my bump, but with some cute facts about what baby Squish is up to in there along the way.  I'm also doing a short questionnaire each week to fill you in on how I'm feeling and what strange symptoms I might be having.

Enjoy!

Size of baby: A sweet pea! Approximately 1/4" and should double in size next week.  So tiny!
Weight gain: Nothing yet.  I should hope not!
Maternity clothes:  Well, I JUST found out a week ago so I haven't bought a thing yet - and I don't need it yet... but I am excited to do some maternity shopping when the time comes!
Gender:  We haven't decided yet if we are going to find out or not.  I have no "premonition" as to the gender yet.  Right now we are still processing the fact that we're expecting a baby at all... and that is SO very exciting.
Nursery: We have had a room in our home dedicated as the "baby room" since before we even started building it.  This baby room has been over a year in the making and I can't wait to get my hands on decorating it.
Development / Movement: No movement yet.  This week Squish is just starting to sprout a nose, eyes, ears, chin, and cheeks.  Adorable.
Sleep: Ohhhh, this explains it.  I have been so very exhausted lately.  Most afternoons I feel like I've been hit by a truck.  I could sleep any time, any where right now.
What I miss: Nothing yet.  Just found out and am still so over the moon!  I'm actually just starting to read up on some of the things I can't have during this pregnancy, so I'm sure there will be an update on this question in the next few months.
Best moment this week: Finding out that we are having a baby.  Duh!  It was also fun to host my friends' daughter, Hayden and two of her girlfriends (all 10 years old) for a little girls' night sleepover.  We painted our nails, had a hot tub (not me!), watched a movie, and finished off the weekend this morning with a waffle brunch and virgin mimosas.  Lovely!
Looking forward to: Everything.  A bump, the symptoms, the excitement, the nerves, the reading we'll be doing, the planning, the whole thing!  Also looking forward to a visit from my sister, her boyfriend, two of my cousins, and their husbands... that's a house full of 8 of us for a whole week.  They arrive in just two weeks' time.  I think I'm going to have to tell them early.  They'll figure it out in 5 minutes when I turn down a glass of wine.  Have I mentioned I love wine?
Cravings: Nothing yet.  I am a pretty healthy eater and have been eating my usual.
Symptoms: Sleepy.  Very, very sleepy.
Workouts: I've been doing my regular workouts (running, weight training, interval training), so will need to buy a heart rate monitor if I want to keep that up!  I've also been salsa dancing but I think I'm going to take a break from that for a little bit.

The Big News!

Let's start by getting the big news out of the way... I'm pregnant!

On Friday, June 7, I had a girls' night planned with two of my best friends for a spa night and dinner out.

I was about 2 days late at that point, but thought "it is way too soon to do a pregnancy test - just hold out another week"; however, my dear friend Anita called me that day and said she just "had a feeling" and that I should do a test.

At around 4:00 that afternoon (had to leave the house at 5:30 that evening for girls' night), I took Anita's advice and did the test and.... BAM.  Positive!  I was SO excited I was shaking!

I always thought I'd tell my husband, Trey in some cute and creative way.  I certainly didn't want to tell him over the phone while he was at work, knowing that I wouldn't see him for the whole evening.

I needed to talk to someone and there was only one option: my sister and best friend in the world, Stacey.  When I called her, I told her it was a bit early to know for sure and that I should maybe do another test.  She was amazing - kept me calm, and told me to call her as soon as I had done another test.

I quickly ran out, bought 4 more pregnancy tests, and did them all.  Positive, positive, positive and... positive!!!

Right after that, I called Stacey, who was immediately in tears.  She is going to make a great Aunt.  I knew I only had about 30 minutes to prepare my creative way to tell Trey that we were going to have a baby!

I put together a small box.  Inside it was a pale green and white striped bunting bag and baby hat, a "baby on board" sticker, and the positive pregnancy test.  I tucked it away into the back of my closet, and ran out to girls' night.  Trey arrived home just as I was climbing into my car and it was SO hard to just give him a quick kiss and act like everything was normal.

It was also very difficult not to tell two of my closest friends when I was spending the entire evening with them, especially so soon after getting the news myself.

When I got home, Trey was in the attic doing some work.  I kept saying "Come downstairs so we can watch a movie together", but he was so wrapped up in his construction project that it took him about 45 minutes to come and say hi.  I told him I had a small "package" for him.  He tells me now that he thought I brought back some dessert from my dinner out with the girls.  When he opened it up, it took a moment for it to register and then he just kept saying "FOR REAL?? ARE YOU SERIOUS??!!" - it was my favourite!  He had the biggest smile on his face and it was a total surprise!

So, here we go... time to start tracking this journey.  Each week I will post a photo, some updates, and a little questionnaire about my pregnancy journey.  Of course, I am starting this at 6 weeks (and won't be making the blog public until after my 12-week check up), so I'll have to play a bit of catch up, but I think I can sum it all up succinctly!

I should also say that Trey and I have recently given the nickname "Squish" to our baby, since we won't be finding out the sex of the baby and it is hard to keep calling the baby "it".  We just had to give Baby G a nickname!  Hence the blog title "Mama & Squish".

Thanks for following along!

(UPDATE: Take a look at our 8 week dating ultrasound!  That little nose is pointing straight up in the air!)
